Ah, apple pie. One of my chosen comfort food dessert! I am not an excellent baker, and it has been proven by my lack of recipe in the baked goods category. I tried to make this apple pie at least three times to get the right crust! Hopefully, this super easy apple pie for beginners would be good for you to try.
Jump to RecipeApple pie sounds very American to me. However, it was actually invented in England. Perhaps, I watched too many Hollywood movies to associate pie with American. The first time I tried apple pie was actually Sara Lee‘s that you can find in the frozen food section at Coles & Woolworths supermarket. Surprisingly, it was really good despite the lack of fresh and natural ingredients. Especially a warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream on top.
From that moment, I have been hunting for the best apple pie in Melbourne. From apple crumble to apple pie in every cafe I could find. My closest friends know that I will always choose pie over cake. Why? because pie can be both savoury and sweet!
As someone who never baked any pie crust before, I watched various Youtube channels to find the recipe that works the best for me. I made some additional changes to suit the available ingredients.
For the apple pie filling, I used the same technique to cook the apple side dish for a pork chop. I like it that way. Some bakers prefer to slice their apples for the apple pie, I prefer to dice it instead. Apparently, Gordon Ramsay also prefers diced apples for his apple pie too! So, I know it’s okay for me to do that.
Okay, so let’s begin with the super easy apple pie for beginners.

- 1 dash Nutmeg freshly grated
- 20 gr Unsalted Butter
Instructions
For the Pie Crust
- Grab a large bowl, sift flour, sugar, and salt. Then add butter.
- Mix all together by hands, careful not to knead too much or the pastry will be tough.
- Add 3 tbsp of beaten egg and mix together until smooth. Add 1/4 cup of cold water if the pastry is too tough.
- Cover with plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge for 30 minutes
For Apple Pie Filling
- Heat up the saucepan with butter.
- Then add diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and a dash of nutmeg.
- Mix well, add water if necessary.
- Cook it until browning, a little bit sticky but apple still half crunchy.
Apple Pie
- Preheat the oven with the fan-forced mode at 250 degrees.
- Get the dough from the fridge, dust the surface with extra flour and roll the dough until it fits the pie pan. Try not to roll too thin and too thick. Then cut out a rough circle slightly bigger than the pan.
- Brush the pan with butter. Line the pan with the pastry, lightly pressing down to remove any air pockets, then trim off the excess pastry. Roll out the remaining pastry into another circle, again slightly larger than the pan, for the top crust.
- With the top crust, cut into 2 cm pcs each to create a latticework.
- Add the apple pie filling evenly into the pan shell, slowly add the lattice pieces on top.
- Press down lightly to seal and trim off the excess pastry.
- Crimp the edges and brush the top with the egg wash to glaze.
- Sprinkle the top pastry with some sugar.
- Bake until the crust is golden brown and crisp. (30-40 minutes)
- Let it rest for at least 2 hours before serving.
That’s it! As easy as that. My super easy apple pie for beginnners!
For the record, I used Kunci Biru brand for all-purposed flour. Anchor brand for the butter. You can use any kind of brand and it won’t matter, just use what you can find in the supermarket. Good luck!
