How to prevent jewellery from tarnishing? I finally got the answer! After trying it many times, I found one that could work with my lifestyle.
Jewellery is one of the easiest ways to elevate an outfit. I am not an expert in fashion but I try my best to look presentable and stylish. Most of the fast-fashion jewellery in the market is not long-lasting because it is not made of real gold/silver. They use a lot of nickel and copper material or even some other cheap materials to look like real gold.
Unfortunately for me, I am allergic to nickel and copper that touches my skin for a long period. I am unable to keep reusing any of my faux jewellery because the jewellery (mostly necklaces) will turn dark and my skin will have green patches from the chemical reaction. It is extremely annoying to only able to wear it once.
If you are similar to me, you couldn’t wear any faux gold jewellery or affordable fashion statement pieces. We could only invest in real gold but most real gold jewellery is expensive and not as fashionable. Then, I have the answer for you!
Here are what you need to prevent jewellery from tarnishing:
- Carton Board
- Polyurethane Spray (if this is not available in your country, the second option would be Acrylic Lacquer Paint Spray – clear colour)
- Button Push Pins
Grab a carton board or any kind of flat surface where you can pin and spray the jewellery. As simple as that! Then, just wait for 30 minutes to one hour to let it dry evenly. It would be faster if you air dries it under the sun.
Based on my own experience, a sprayed faux gold necklace lasted 3 times uses before it turns slightly green. This was already an achievement for me because normally I can only use it once and tossed it away. It frustrated me that I would bring harm to the environment!
After 3 uses, I can see a bit of discoloured on the chain and it left green marks on my neck. The horror! The trick now is to bring back the colour to the original shine. And I also have the perfect solution for this! All you need is a cotton pad and Fanbo Hoitong Powder. It’s a classic Chinese powder that was famous a long time ago for my grandmother’s generation makeup. This trick was taught by my mum to bring back the discoloured jewellery to its original shine.
Grab Fanbo Hoitong Powder and cotton pad, dab it on the ‘darker’ area of the necklace, and then use the cotton pad to wipe the powder. You’ll see the green colour on the cotton pad from the chemical reaction.
Here you can see in the first photo that the area where it touches my neck turns slightly darker because I was sweating. The second photo looks brighter after one or two wipes.
